The Face of Chinese Opera
The first collection of works “Beauty Defies Tyranny- The Face of Peking Opera” was based on the impressive tales of Chinese Opera, and began with an extensive journey in the spring of 1995 through five of Chinas largest provinces. I became heavily influenced by Chinese poetry and classical calligraphic landscapes as well as the legends, folklore, temples, fabrics and furniture, architecture and the great pantheon of deities that make up Chinese tradition.
I then began to study the opera performers back stage and created the series “Disciples of the Pear garden”. “There is magic in the presence of transformation and a complete sense of poetry in the application of make-up and dress. These works capture the brief window of transition from actor to performing legend. Most of the studies and paintings for this series were created in the temporary bamboo opera theatre of southern China and HongKong”.
